Myths of the Empty Nest
Keep your eyes wide open for the unexpected
What do you think it means to be an “Empty Nester”? There are a lot of labels, and lots of
people wearing them. There are also a lot of myths and misconceptions about what that label means. Yes, this is a time for change, but you can do it your way. It’s your nest!
Here are some stories people will try to tell you about what it means to be an “empty nester”,and new ways for you to think about it to write your own story.
“The kids are gone!”. No, your kids aren’t gone. They’ll be back. Soon!. Before you turn the old bedroom into a home gym or meditation spa, think about where Lucy will sleep when she comes home for the weekend
“You’ll have lots of quiet time”. Maybe for a while. But Grandkids are coming. That is likely, and amazing, and so you should plan accordingly. Assuming your solution is not to move as far away as possible, you’ll want to make room for the next little birds. Plan for a crib, a toy room and more, and for a lot of fun!
“Just be happy where you are”. Actually, now is a great time for change. You may want to live further from town, closer to parks or healthcare, in a one story ranch, or a home with a playroom and kids bedrooms upstairs. After all these years, it’s time to make your nest perfect for you. Find a Realtor (we know a couple!) to show you the options.
“Time to downsize”. Maybe. For sure if that’s what you want. But you may want a bigger home for entertaining, for family get togethers, for luxury or just because you’ve always wanted it. This is your nest! You get to dream! If you want to, you get to dream big!
“Move south”. We love traveling. And we love being in warm places. But we love home, too. Before you sell it all and move away, be sure that is what you want.
